RRPP activities: Qualitative Research Methods Colloquium
26-27 February, 2010

As part of the RRPP series of methodology colloquiums, member of CRPRC Studiorum research team attended the first colloquium on qualitative research methods in Tirana, Albania.

The Qualitative Research Methods Colloquium, hosted by the RRPP Local Coordination Unit of Albania (European University of Tirana), took place in Tirana during 26-27 February 2010. 18 researchers from the Western Balkan countries attended the colloquium held by Lea Sgier, lecturer at the Universities of Geneva and Neuchâtel in Switzerland.

The purpose of the event was to assist the participants in clarifying certain central issues in qualitative research. The following topics were addressed: conceptualisation and operationalisation, sampling/selection of data sources, data collection/generation, data analysis, quality criteria in qualitative research, etc.

The participants of the colloquium also attended the RRPP Launching Ceremony in Albania, hosted by the European University in Tirana and the RRPP Director, Prof. Nicolas Hayoz, from the University of Fribourg. The Swiss Ambassador to Albania, Ms Yvana Enzler, as well as the representatives of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Ministry of Education and Sciences also attended the event. They both confirmed their support to the strengthening of the research capacities and to enabling the networking between scientists in the entire Western Balkans region. The initial findings of the Country Assessment for Social Research in Albania were presented, too, emphasising and confirming the need for greater support in the field of scientific research in Albania.

The ceremony was held to officially mark the presence of RRPP in Albania. For this purpose, Memoranda of Understanding were signed between the RRPP Management at the University of Fribourg, the European University of Tirana and the recently selected research grant recipients and partners in the country: the University of Tirana, the University of New York, the Institute of Statistics, the Centre for Advanced Studies and the Association Solutions for Development.
