Legal Seminar 2011: Approaches to Equality and Non-discrimination Legislation inside and outside the EU

CRPRC Studiorum’s representative participated in the annual legal seminar organised by the European Network of Legal Experts in the Non-Discrimination Field and the European Network of Legal Experts in the field of Gender Equality, which took place in Brussels on the 04th of October 2011.

HRP_2011_legal_seminarBiljana Kotevska, Programme Director of the Human Rights programme, participated in the legal seminar on equality and non-discrimination, organised annually by the European Network of Legal Experts in the Non-Discrimination Field and the European Network of Legal Experts in the field of Gender Equality. The topic of the seminar for 2011 was ‘Approaches to Equality and Non-discrimination Legislation inside and outside the EU’.

Representatives from the European Commission, EU Member States governments, equality bodies and European NGOs participated in the seminar. The main topic of the discussions was on transposition and implementation of EU equality and anti-discrimination Directives, with a special focus on the experiences from the legal systems of third countries. Sandra Fredman, one of the key contemporary authors on equality and non-discrimination, gave a keynote speech on anti-discrimination legislation from a comparative point of view, focusing particularly on Canada, the USA, India and South Africa. Series of workshops were held within the frame of the seminar, including on burden of proof, multiple discrimination and positive action.
